SJU Is Your Gateway Out of the BVI
San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) is the Caribbean's busiest hub — and for travelers flying out of Tortola, it's the primary connection point to the rest of the world. The EIS–SJU flight takes about 45 minutes and is operated by Cape Air and Silver Airways with multiple daily departures.
Departing EIS — What to Know
When you leave Tortola by air, you go through BVI departure procedures at EIS. You'll pay a departure tax (confirm the current amount at check-in — it's typically around $20 per person, sometimes included in the ticket price). Arrive at EIS at least 90 minutes before your flight. The terminal is compact but BVI departure processing takes time.
Note: you'll clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on arrival in San Juan, since Puerto Rico is U.S. territory. The CBP process at SJU for arrivals from the BVI can take 30–45 minutes — factor this in when booking onward connections.
Connecting Onward from SJU
SJU has excellent connectivity to the U.S. mainland and beyond. Key routes include:
- New York (JFK/EWR/LGA): Multiple daily departures on American, JetBlue, and United.
- Miami (MIA): American Airlines hub with connections across the U.S., Latin America, and Europe.
- Atlanta (ATL): Delta hub with the widest U.S. domestic network.
- Boston, Washington, Chicago: All well-served from SJU.
- International: Several European carriers and Latin American airlines serve SJU.
Minimum Connection Time at SJU
Allow at least 2.5 to 3 hours for a connection at SJU from EIS. You arrive as an international passenger (from British territory), which means a separate CBP processing lane, then you need to get from the regional arrivals area to your departing gate. SJU is manageable but not small — give yourself the time.
Overnight in San Juan
If your schedule allows, spending a night in Old San Juan before flying home is one of the best add-ons to a BVI trip. The historic district, the beaches of Condado and Isla Verde, and the food scene rival anywhere in the Caribbean. Fly out early the next morning refreshed.
