Why Almost Everyone Connects Through SJU
Unless you're hopping the ferry from St. Thomas, virtually every traveler flying to Tortola passes through San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). It's the Caribbean's busiest hub and the primary connection point between the U.S. mainland and EIS. Getting your SJU layover right is the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one.
How Long a Layover Do You Need?
Give yourself a minimum of 2 hours at SJU when connecting to a Cape Air or Silver Airways flight to EIS. Here's why: arriving from the U.S. mainland, you land in the domestic terminal. Your Cape Air or Silver flight to EIS departs from a different area of the airport. Depending on how congested SJU is, walking between terminals, locating the regional carrier check-in, and clearing any paperwork can take longer than expected.
If you can swing a 2.5 to 3 hour layover, you'll have breathing room for delays and a chance to grab food. SJU has solid options airside once you clear through.
Important: You're Entering a New Country at EIS
When you land at EIS, you are entering the British Virgin Islands — a British Overseas Territory. This means you clear BVI immigration and customs on arrival even though you just came from San Juan or St. Thomas. Have your passport, completed arrival card (available on the plane), return ticket, and accommodation address ready before you land.
Which Airlines Connect Through SJU to EIS?
- American Airlines has the most mainland U.S. cities connecting through SJU, with interline agreements with Cape Air.
- JetBlue offers good SJU service from the Northeast and has interline options.
- Delta and United also fly SJU — check if your specific routing works before booking separately.
The SJU Alternative: Connect Through STT Instead
Some travelers prefer connecting through St. Thomas (STT) rather than San Juan. STT is closer to Tortola — just a 15-minute flight on Cape Air — and some find the smaller airport easier to navigate. The tradeoff is fewer mainline connection options. If you're coming from the Northeast and American or JetBlue has a direct flight to STT, it can be a cleaner routing than SJU.
Overnight in San Juan?
San Juan is a genuinely great city. If your schedule allows, consider booking a one-night stopover in Old San Juan before continuing to Tortola. The historic quarter, the forts, and the food scene make it worth an extra day. Fly out of SJU early the next morning and you'll arrive in Tortola by mid-morning.
